How much storage capacity is enough for a MDVR

Hard drive/ SD card of a MDVR is primarily for the storage of recorded footage from the car cameras, either for playback or evidence preservation. We might have in mind the local storage recording time that will needed before acquire a MDVR, but not clear exactly how much storage capacity is required.

There are quite a few factors that determine how much storage capacity is enough for a MDVR.

1. Maximum storage capacity a MDVR can accept

Currently in ICARVISIONS MDVR product range:

SD card MDVR accepts up to 256GB storage capacity (double SD cards, 128GB each );

HDD MDVR’s support HDD with a recommended maximum space of 2TB, or 4TB (double HDD MDVR models that accept 2*2TB HDD).

2.  The number of cameras connect to the MDVR

More cameras are used, more storage capacity will be consumed.

3. Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. Resolution is sometimes identified by the width and height of the image as well as the total number of pixels in the image.

For example, an image that is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high (1920 x1080) contains (multiply) 2,073,600 pixels (or 2.0 Megapixels). As the megapixels in the pickup device in your camera increase so does the possible maximum size image you can produce. This means that a 2 megapixel camera is capable of capturing a larger image than a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Most of ICARVISIONS MDVR’s support resolution ranges from CIF to 1080P (2.0MP), including CIF, HD1, D1, 960H, 720P and 1080P.

4. Recording quality

The quality of the video recorded on the MDVR can also be manipulated by adjusting the bit rate. 

ICARVISONS MDVR offers 8 levels of options for the recording quality.

5. Other elements

Other elements related to the storage capacity include but not limited to:

Audio recording: using audio recording will increase the size of the video recordings.

Record mode: to record regular videos or alarm videos only

Record schedule: to let the MDVR record on certain days of the week or certain period of time of the day.
